"It's not your job. You don't know how much money you've got in your bank. You aren't the vehicle you're driving. The contents of your wallet aren't for you. This is one of my favourite lines from one of my favourite books: Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club. You're not your fuckin' khakis.

I've probably read Fight Club five or six times. But when I recently reread it again, that line really struck me. If you try to follow all those things, are you wasting your life?

It's easy to get so lost in the middle of our search of something we're after, that we lose sight of what counts, and before we know it, we spend our time pursuing the wrong things.

Setting targets and following stuff in life is perfect. However, to live a meaningful life, you do not need whatever you are pursuing. Here's the reason.

Not the bucket list, you are

“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” – Marcus Aurelius

Don't trick yourself into thinking that you just have to make it count to do insane shit. If you keep going from one thing to another so that you can cross stuff off your list, and can chat about it at parties, it's all pointless.

We buy things, we party, we leap off cliffs, we go on holidays, we travel to different places, we change jobs, but after we've done those things, nothing changes internally.

Not your social status, you are

All means to quantify ourselves are college degree, work title, number of friends and followers. We need to decide, somehow, where in society we stand.

Are you a winner, or is it a loser for you? What we're chasing is that. We're all doing stuff to fill out our resumes and improve our network. We'd like to say, "I went to University X." Or, "I work at University X."

“People who hold important positions in society are commonly labelled “somebodies,” and their inverse “nobodies”-both of which are, of course, nonsensical descriptors, for we are all, by necessity, individuals with distinct identities and comparable claims on existence.”
― Alain de Botton

You're not the account of your bank

Money is great. Let's be frank, you can not do anything without it. If you want to get away and live in the woods and be as self-sufficient as Thoreau, feel free to do so.

“I have no money, no resources, no hopes. I am the happiest man alive.”
– Henry Miller

Stop Chasing Closed With Your Eyes

If you only do things that you think will make you happy, your life will be over in the blink of an eye.

In comparison to what a lot of us believe, life is long enough. As Seneca put it: "Life is long enough if well lived."

All you have to do is live free of concern, pressure, and daydreams in the moment. Life is long when you do that, and time will not move in the blink of an eye anymore.

“What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
