Plastics have been prevalent in our everyday lives for the first time in the 20th century. Used in everything from food packaging to medical equipment, this highly flexible and cost-effective material has made our lives more comfortable.
Such convenience comes at a cost, however, and scientists warn that the failure of plastics to biodegrade is taking a toll on the world. In order to make matters worse, recycling technology around the world is seriously underdeveloped.
